I am a scientist and my job takes me all over the world. Many years ago, I began
adding a few days onto each business trip to hang out in some of the exotic as
well as not so exotic places that I had an opportunity to visit. I attempted to
make the visits efficient by using tour books to guide me. I found most of them
pretty boring if not outright incorrect. I always found it more interesting to
read the tour book after I had finished the trip. Eventually, I stopped using
tour books as a primary planning aid. Sure, they provide some useful data for
travel, but don't take them too seriously. I finally accepted that I am not a
very good tourist, at least not the kind for which the tour guides must be
written. Moreover, being a good tourist is not something I even want to be. As
you will see, striving to be a poor tourist is sometimes a lot more
rewarding.
I began to document my travels and my findings and hints to more interesting
travel, some of which seemed fundamentally important. After reluctantly sharing
a few of them with friends, I was amazed by the positive response I received.
Little by little my audience grew, email making a sizable audience more
practical. Now internet has made it possible for me to share them with you.
I have found that writing enhances, even changes ones experience of travel.
Indeed, often, my decisions concerning travel come after answering the question,
"Which choice would be most interesting to read about?" So far this
method has not failed me. Soon I extended the rule to more than just travel and
I find myself making many choices in my life according to whatever makes the
most interesting story.
I would like to hear your comments as well as related experiences that you found
useful. If permitted, I will share your insights with my readers. I hope you
enjoy my stories. ……. Honest, they are all true.
I will update this page and add experiences as they happen. I have a number of
stories almost ready to add and I have a
number planned for the future. I hope you enjoy them.
